Karely Lopez conquers Carol Castro

Mexico´s Karely Lopez is the new World Boxing Federation (WBF) Womens World Strawweight Champion, after defeating compatriot Carol Castro for the vacant title on Friday night, September 18, at the Deportivo Antonio Palacios in Ensenada.

This was a rematch, as Lopez had won their original encounter by tenth round retirement last May, but she didn’t get a great start to the sequel as an accidental head-clash gave her a cut eye already in the first round. However, Lopez quickly regrouped and started to use her better boxing skills to keep Castro at bay.

Once she found her rhythm, it was clear that if Lopez could continue to box she would win most of the rounds, and that’s exactly what she did, using sharp combinations and precise jabs to control the fight, as Castro struggled to find a way to get close enough to land her own shots.

In round nine Lopez shook Castro to her boots and almost scored a knock-down, but Castro was saved from going down when the bell sounded to end the stanza.

Castro also survived the onslaught from Lopez in round ten, but in the end there was no doubt who would get the decision. Judges Daniel Lopez, Raul Wilhelmy and Manuel Rincon all voted in favor of Lopez by scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 100-90. Referee was Juan Jose Ramirez.

The new WBF World Strawweight Champion improved her professional record to 8-5-3 (2), while Castro, who showed a lot of heart and determination throughout the entire bout, drops to a deceiving 6-7 (2).

The fight was promoted by Showbox Promotions.
