Rafael Reyes beats Saul Banos

Two new World Boxing Federation (WBF) champions was crowned on Saturday night, September 19, in Loreto, Mexico, as Rafael Reyes beat Saul Banos to win the vacant WBF International Super Bantamweight title, and Jesus Laguna appeared fortunate to defeat Rafael Gutierrez to lift the vacant WBA Latin Featherweight crown.

Rafael Reyes came out banging from the start and put on a relentless attack on Saul Banos, who had no answer to the onslaught and did well to get through the first round. But in round two it was all over, as referee Manuel Murrillo Naranjo stepped in to save Banos, who was barely defending himself, at 1:59 of the round.

The new WBF International Super Bantamweight champion improved his record to 17-5 (13), and at only twenty-four years of age Reyes could be a force to be reckoned with in the future. After six victories in a row, Saul Banos lost for the first time since February 2012 and drops to 11-4 (7).

Underdog Rafael Gutierrez looked on his way to causing an upset when he dropped the more experienced and harder punching Jesus Laguna in the first round. But Laguna beat the count of referee Murrillo Naranjo, and while Gutierres appeared to be in control he also suffered cuts over both eyes.

Gutierres continued to dominate the fight and was leading by scores of 49-45, 49-45 and 48-46 after five rounds, when Murillo Naranjo took him to get the injuries examined by the ringside doctor, who decided that he should not be allowed to continue.

Laguna was awarded the victory, and with it the WBF Latin Featherweight title, by technical knockout at 1:02 of round six, and improved his record to 15-9-2 (14). Unlucky Gutierrez, a former challenger for the Mexican national title, falls to 4-5 (2) but probably deserves a rematch.
