By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) has WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) backed to a corner with nowhere to hide or run now that the World Boxing Council has given the 25-year-old Canelo a voluntary defense for his next fight on May 7th on Cinco de Mayo in 2016. Canelo must face Golovkin in his next fight after his voluntary defense or else face being stripped of his WBC 160lb title by the WBC for failure to defend it against the WBC’s mandatory challenger Golovkin.
Golovkin is eager to get his chance at fighting Canelo, because he wants to prove who’s who in the middleweight division to show the boxing his talent.
“I’m looking forward to the super fight with Canelo for the fans next year to show who is the best,” Golovkin said to TMZ.com.
If Canelo is not stripped of his WBC title, or beaten in his first title defense in May of next year, then he should be facing Golovkin by September of 2016.
Canelo plans to fight only twice next year, both fights being on the Mexican holidays Cinco de Mayo and the Mexican Independence Day. This works for the 33-year-old Golovkin, because he wants to fight on the Mexican holidays because he has many Mexican boxing fans due to his “Mexican style” that he and his K2 Promotional team have used as a slogan for his fights. Golovkin has become a crossover star with the Mexican community, so a fight against Canelo on one of the Mexican holidays is something that Golovkin looks forward to eagerly.
Golovkin’s rep is confident the fight with Canelo will take place next year. “The fight will most likely take place 2nd half of 2016,” Golovkin’s rep said to TMZ.com. “Both will have fights in early 2016, and then fight each other in the second half of the year.”
The site for the Canelo-Golovkin fight is still yet to be determined. However, they want a venue that can seat many boxing fans, and they are reportedly considering the 90,000 seat AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas or Madison Square Garden in New York. MSG only seats a little 20,000 fans, so it’s not nearly as good an options as one of the big venues in Texas.
“Going into 2016, this will be the biggest boxing event. It could be any of the biggest arenas in the country,” Golovkin’s rep said.
In the meantime, Golovkin and Canelo both have fights they need to take care of in the first quarter of 2016. Golovkin could face Tureano Johnson next. He wanted to fight the winner of the Andy Lee vs. Billy Joe Saunders fight, but with Saunders winning, Golovkin has little chance to fight him. Canelo’s next opponent is anyone’s guess.
