By Eric Thomas: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in working with the high powered manager Al Haymon, who he currently has a lawsuit out on. Arum is open to working with Haymon right now, and he specifically has two fights he’d like to make at this time if there’s mutual interest. Arum would like to match his fighter WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford against Haymon’s fighter WBA 140lb champion Adrien Broner in a unification fight.
Further, Arum would also like to match his guy, WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas, against Haymon’s fighter WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia in a unification fight at 147. Whether Haymon is interested in either of those fights is unclear. Crawford and Vargas, although champions, are not big names and don’t have a large following. They not pay-per-view fights or even close to being pay-per-view fights. The chances are that Crawford and Vargas will never be PPV fighters.
“I’m not making a war, I’ll fight any of their guys, any of their guys. They want to make matches, and we have Terence Crawford, Adrien Broner wants to fight Terence Crawford, I’m happy to do it,” Arum said to Fighthype.com. “For me, it’s possible. I am only one side. Man, I’m not kidding, I’m not playing games. They want a guy, they want [Danny] Garcia to fight Jessie Vargas, I’d do it tomorrow.”
While you can make an argument that Danny Garcia would have to be favored against a limited fighter like Jessie Vargas, you can’t make that same argument about Broner in a fight against Crawford. Browne has already been exposed twice by Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter. It’s pretty clear from watching those two fights that Broner has to be matched carefully in order to keep him from losing again.
Crawford would likely be a clear favorite if he were matched against Broner. Danny Garcia would probably be the favorite against Vargas. However, Arum still comes out ahead in a Garcia vs. Vargas fight, because it’s a match that would increase the popularity of Vargas even if he lost the fight.
“For me there’s no problem. For them, it seems to be a problem. They can solve their problem by getting on the phone, they know my number, and calling me up and we’d make the fight,” said Arum. “I’m making an attempt fight now! I’m willing! They want to fight Crawford, give me Broner. They want to fight this kid Vargas, give me Danny Garcia. Just ‘I’m ready to do it, Al!’ I’m ready to do it.”
I hope the 84-year-old Arum isn’t holding his breath while waiting by the phone for Haymon to call him to make those two fights, because I do not see that happening. Haymon likely isn’t going to bother contacting Arum to work with him. What this means is that Arum loses out because he doesn’t have anyone to match against Crawford and Vargas.
Arum will likely match Vargas against Tim Bradley later this year, but there’s only so many times Arum can force feed the boxing fights between those two fighters. Arum is talking about wanting to match Crawford against Ruslan Provodnikov next. Provodnikov has lost two out of his last four fights.
