By Tim Nielson: Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) ended WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan “White Tyson” Chagaev’s short two-year title rein on Saturday night in defeating him by a 10th round knockout in beautiful Grozny, Russia. The fight looked like it was in Chagaev’s hands in the 10th round, when Browne suddenly loaded up with a missile of a right hand and caught Chagaev flush with it and sent him down on the canvas.
It was so sudden and surprising that the huge pro-Chagaev crowd were speechless for a few seconds after the knockdown. They were waiting like the rest of the fans at home to see if Chagaev could get back to his feet. He did eventually make it to his feet. However, Browne was able to back Chagaev up against the ropes and unload on him with a devastating barrage of head shots that resulted in referee Stanley Christodoulou stopping the fight.
Chagaev didn’t protest the stoppage, because he was clearly too hurt to say much about it. Browne would have finished him off if the fight were allowed to continue. There’s no question about that.
Browne had his own problems earlier in the fight in getting knocked on his backside by a long looping left hand from Chagaev. The punch was perfectly thrown and had a lot of heat on it. It’s not surprising that Browne went down from that punch because it landed with a hard impact, and Browne appeared to think he was far enough outside to avoid getting hit.
Chagaev hit Browne at will with punches in the final seconds of the 6th after the knockdown, but Browne did a good job of weathering the storm. He did suffer a cut over his left eye in that round, but nothing serious beyond that.
In rounds seven through nine, Browne boxed and moved around the ring, looking to jab and hit Chagaev with pot shots. It was good work by Browne, but Chagaev looked like he edged those rounds with his hard left hands that he was landing from time to time. Browne wasn’t able to unload on Chagaev the way he needed to in order to win the rounds.
Chagaev pressured Browne in the 10th round an d had him backed up against the ropes in the closing moments of the fight. The two heavyweights then simultaneously threw power shots. Browne’s right hand got there first and put Chagaev down on the canvas hard. Chagaev then barely beat the count after crawling his way back to his feet. Once Chagaev was back on his feet, he was met with a series of hard power shots from Browne.
Chagaev covered up and was able to block some of the shots, but more than a few caught him cleanly to the head. Chagaev then moved laterally to his left along the ropes to try and escape the punishment. However, Browne continued to unload on him until the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.
