By Tim Nielson: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz and former IBF/WBC 147lb champ Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) will face each other on April 30th next month at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. This is a rematch that will be televised on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox during primetime. The fight card will kick off at 5:00 p.m. PT. The undercard for the Ortiz-Berto fight is still yet to be revealed.
The official announcement for the Ortiz vs. Berto 2 rematch will reportedly be taking place this week, according to ESPN.
Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) has some problems in the past with his career, but he seems to have turned things around recently with wins over Manuel Perez and Gilberto Leon.
Ortiz went through a bad spell after his 12 round unanimous decision win over Berto in 2011. Ortiz was then beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr., Josesito Lopez and Luis Collazo in three consecutive fights. When you look back at those fights, it seems insane that Ortiz was put in such difficult fights consecutively. His management should have hit the reset button with his career after his loss to Mayweather in 2011, because it was not a smart move to immediately put him in with Lopez. Further, having Ortiz fight Collazo after the loss to Lopez was an even worse move, because Ortiz had been out of the ring for over a year at the time the fight was made.
Berto lost his last fight to Mayweather in September last year in a fight televised on HBO pay-per-view. It wasn’t a competitive fight, as Berto lacked the hand speed, punching power and overall talent to make it a competitive bout. Never the less, Berto got a nice payday from that fight and received a great deal of publicity. Surprisingly, the defeat didn’t hurt Berto any, as he’s still ranked #3 by the World Boxing Council. It obviously doesn’t hurt that Berto is managed by Al Haymon, one of the most respected managers in the business.
The Berto-Ortiz fight is a real pick em type of match-up. They’re both so shot at this point in their careers, it’s impossible to say which of the two will wind up winning the contest.
