By Sean McDaniel: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn says Brook would fight WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) in the United States like Vargas wants, but the money is in the UK. That’s where they’ll make more money. Brook, 29, wants to fight Vargas in a unification fight in the summer.
However, Vargas says the fight must take place in the States because he doesn’t feel comfortable fighting the unbeaten Brook (36-0, 35 KOs) in the UK.
“Promoter Eddie Hearn here in DC. Says Brook would fight Vargas in US but doesnt believe $ is here. Can pay Vargas “mind blowing” $ in UK,” said Dan Rafael on his Twitter.
It’s unknown what all this means. If Hearn and Brook choose not to fight Vargas in the States, then they might not get the fight. They might need to throw some crazy numbers at the 27-year-old Vargas to get him to come to the UK.
Obviously, Vargas will come over to there for the right price, but I’m not sure it’ll be worth it to Hearn and Brook to pay him his asking price. They’ll essentially be buying his title because Vargas stands no chance of beating Brook and he probably knows that. We’re talking about a fighter that was easily beaten by the light hitting Tim Bradley last year. Vargas was totally outclassed by Bradley aside from the 12th round. That was the only round that Vargas looked good.
Hearn is probably thinking that Brook’s popularity will increase if he defeats Vargas to win his WBO title. I’m not sure if that’s going to be the case though. Brook might get a little more popular than he is now in his home country of England, but not in the U.S, because Vargas isn’t a popular fighter of there.
Vargas isn’t much of a step up for Brook from the fighters he’s been facing lately since winning the IBF title. You can say Vargas is maybe a little better than Frankie Gavin, Jo Jo Dan and Kevin Bizier.
