By Sean McDaniel: Heavyweight Hughie Fury (20-0, 10 KOs) stayed unbeaten tonight in defeating the always tough Fred Kassi (18-4-1, 10 KOs) in a fight cut shot in the 7th round due to a cut the 21-year-old Hughie received from a head-butt. The fight went to the scorecards and Hughie was awarded a 7th round technical decision by the scores of 69-66, 70-64, and 69-65.
The fight took place at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. Hughie was cut over his left eye and it caused him enough problems that the fight needed to be stopped.
The negative thing about the fight was that it didn’t go the full route because of Hughie’s cut. Hughie didn’t show much of a desire to let his hands go and take chances in the ring. For the most part, Hughie fought cautiously against Kassi and didn’t seem willing to throw his shots with any conviction. Kassi was always a threat to counter Hughie when he did throw anything with power. I think Hughie didn’t want to take any unnecessary chances.
The positive was that Hughie conclusively beat a guy that both Dominic Breazeale and Chris Arreola failed to defeat in a real way. Kassi lost to Breazeale and fought to a draw against Arreola last year, but fans that saw those fights believed that Kassi deserved the victory. For Hughie to beat Kassi in a clear manner, it was impressive.
Kassi wasn’t able to do the things he’d done against other opponents because Hughie wasn’t giving him any chance to land his shots. Hughie wasn’t throwing big shots like Breazeale and Arreola both had done against Kassi. By not taking any chances to throw power shots, it enabled Hughie to jab Kassi at will without getting hit in return all that much.
Hughie will need to show a little more offense when he starts going up the food chain in the future, because he won’t be able to win fights like he did tonight against the better fighters.
