Lemieux’s manager hoping to make Stevens fight

Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux’s manager Camille Estephan is working with HBO to see if he can make a fight between Lemieux and Curtis Stevens for October 22. When the fight was first brought up, it was considered a great idea by many of boxing fans. Right now the negotiations have ground to halt over money. Estephan is hoping that HBO can step in to save the fight to make it a reality. It would be a good match-up for either person.

“Stevens wants to fight Lemieux and Lemieux wants to fight Stevens, but we would have to depend on the TV for that and the TV is not done yet,” said Estephan to Ringtv.com. “So there’s other opponents that we’re speaking to given the fact we haven’t finalized the deal with TV, and it’s a fight that takes a TV budget. So that’s where we’re at.”

If Lemieux ends up fighting someone else, it will likely be someone beatable again. Lemieux had an easy fight last June in stopping Glen Tapia in four rounds. Lemieux’s management was previously looking to match him against junior middleweight James De La Rosa. They instead found Tapia, and Lemieux easily beat him.

Lemieux is one of those guys who is mostly matched against weak opposition for long stretches before getting put in with someone good, who usually beat him. Gennady Golovkin knocked Lemieux out in eight rounds last year. Lemieux says he wants a rematch against Golovkin so that he can try and avenge the loss, but a second fight between them would likely not interest boxing fans. The fans already saw the results from their previous fight, and they obviously see no point in them fighting again.

Lamieux and his management likely won’t take any dangerous opponents anytime soon, because he has the potential of fighting Saul Canelo Alvarez in the near future, and they’re not going to want to risk losing that fight by fighting a good contender and getting beaten again. Lemieux was beaten twice in 2011 in defeats to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine. Lemieux’s career was rebuilt after that with him winning a lot of fights against lower level guys until beating Hassan N’Dam. However, Golovkin beat him badly to take his IBF title.

Stevens is a dangerous fighter. It’s hard to see him being the problem in getting the fight put together. Of course, Stevens isn’t going to fight for free against Lemieux, because the man has got to make a living.
