Before September 17, Golden Boy Promotions dangled a fight against their flagship fighter Saul Canelo Alvarez for the winner of the middleweight contest between Willie Monroe Jr. and Gabriel Rosado. When Monroe won the fight instead of Rosado, word leaked back from Canelo’s trainer that there wouldn’t be a fight between him and Monroe.
Needless to say, Monroe isn’t happy about it, because he thought that he would have a chance of getting the Canelo fight too if he won. Monroe now feels that Golden Boy or Canelo’s team though Rosado would win the fight. When it failed to happen, then they decided they weren’t going to give Monroe the fight due to his difficult style of fighting.
Monroe beat Rosado by a 12 round unanimous decision in a one-sided fight on the undercard of Canelo’s 9th round knockout win over WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith on September 17 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The final judges’ scores were 118-110, 117-110 and 116-112.
The fight wasn’t even close. Rosado didn’t have the hand speed, talent or the ability to box Monroe. The final results were just too obvious. Monroe was the far better fighter of the two. It’s unclear why Golden Boy even floated the idea of having the winner of the Rosado vs. Monroe fight face Canelo, because it painfully obvious as soon as the fight was signed that Monroe would win. But the thing is, Golden Boy must not have known that, because if they did, they wouldn’t have been talking about having the winner face Canelo.
“I don’t think it’s Canelo himself, but it is his team. I know Canelo would fight me,” said Monroe. “I think it is trainers who fear that they can’t prepare Canelo for my style. If he is a true man, they should stick to their word. The plan was for the winner of that fight to be able to fight Canelo. They thought Rosado would win, and he would just be a guy that would get pounded by Canelo.”
We’ve seen Canelo struggle when he faces boxers with speed and movement in his fights against Austin Trout, Floyd Mayweather Jr. an Erislandy Lara. There are a lot of boxing fans who feel that Canelo should have lost all three of those fights. It goes without saying that Golden Boy wouldn’t put their golden goose Canelo in a situation where he would get potentially out-boxed and beaten.
Even if Canelo beats Monroe, it wouldn’t be easy for him, and he would likely be made to look bad in the fight. Golden Boy is trying to build an image for Canelo, so they can’t afford to have him look bad against his opponents, and Monroe would likely make him look really bad.
“All I want is the opportunity. Canelo got to where he is by fighting big names, so I feel I deserve this opportunity,” said Monroe. “If the shoe was on the other foot, and it was me who did not want to fight an aggressive fighter, I would look like a punk.”
What does Monroe expect? We already saw Canelo and Golden Boy swerve the Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight this year. Should Monroe be surprised that they’re going to do the same thing with him.
