Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0 21 KOs) says he wants to stand over Shannon Briggs (60-6-1, 53 KOs) and taunt him after he knocks him out when the two of them face each other for the vacant WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight title in December. For some reasons, the 37-year-old Browne is bugged enough about the 44-year-old Briggs to the point where he looks forward to taunting him if/when he KOs him next month.
Browne said this to Fight News about what he wants to do to Briggs after he beats him:
“One of the things I’ve been looking at and thinking about over and over in my mind is knocking Briggs out and standing over the top of him and saying LET’S GO CHAMP!” said Browne.
Browne, 6’4”, will likely be the favorite when the two of them face each other next month. However, that doesn’t mean he’s going to get the knockout. Briggs can take a pretty good shot, and he’s a devastating body puncher. Further, Briggs hasn’t lost a fight in six years since his 12 round unanimous decision defeat at the hands of former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in 2010. Vitali had a lot of size on Briggs in that fight. Briggs suffered a bad biceps tear early in the fight.
Browne has not really had much experience against good fighters during his seven-year pro career. It’s impossible to predict what kind of results he’ll get facing a guy like Briggs, because he’s only had one good opponent in his career and that was Ruslan Chagaev last March. Browne was well on his way to losing that fight when he scored a knockout in the 10th round. Browne finally got confident in the 10th and was able to KO the 38-year-old Chagaev. I honestly think that Browne would have lost the fight if he’d come out swinging from the very first round.
Chagaev would have adjusted quickly to Browne’s power, and gone on to out-box him over 12. But what Brownd did was fight passively for nine rounds, not throwing many power shots until the 10th. When the 10th round came, Browne suddenly turned on the heat and Chagaev wasn’t ready for that kind of power coming from nowhere.
