A rematch between WBA World light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (30-3, 16 KOs) and former WBA champion Juergen Braehmer (48-3, 35 KOs) is in the works for April 2017, according to Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn. Cleverly, 29, stopped Braehmer in the 6th round on October 1 after Braehmer suffered an arm injury in their fight in Neubrandenburg, Germany.
Braehmer had a rematch clause in the contract with Cleverly, so the two fighters will face each other again. This is a rematch that some boxing fans will be happy to hear about, as many of them didn’t like the results of their previous fight. The fans wanted to see the fight play out, but Braehmer’s arm injury caused the fight to be halted.
It was a huge upset win for Cleverly, as he came into the fight having lost 3 out of his previous 6 fights, and he was thought to have very little chance of winning. Cleverly used a high punch output assault to force the 38-year-old Braehmer into a war of attrition, and it worked. Braehmer suffered an injury during the fast pace fight, which resulted in the match being stopped after the 6th round. What’s interesting is that Braehmer was getting the better of Cleverly with his solid shots and his superior punching power. At the time of the stoppage, Braehmer was ahead on all three of the judges’ scorecards by the scores 58-56, 58-56 and 58-56. The loss for Braehmer interrupted a six-fight title reign for the German fighter, albeit against largely weak opposition rather than the talented fighters in the division.
Cleverly’s win over Braehmer made him a two-time world champion. Natha previously held the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight title from 2011 to 2013. Nathan lost his WBO title to Sergey Kovaelv in 2013.
Having the rematch between Cleverly and Braehmer in Germany will be a huge positive for Braehmer, because he fights well when fighting in front of his fans. Cleverly will likely push a fast pace like he did last time he fought Braehmer in hopes of wearing down the German fighter. It wouldn’t be all that surprising if Cleverly beats Braehmer a second time. It doesn’t matter than Cleverly doesn’t have the same kind of punching power that Braehmer possesses. What’s important is that Cleverly sets a fast pace to try and wear down Braehmer. The German fighter is almost 40 now. If Cleverly can make Braehmer fight at a super face pace for the entire fight, he might be able to get another stoppage.
