After 11-years in the pro ranks, Gennady Golovkin is entering what could be the toughest year of his career in 2017 with him facing Daniel Jacobs on March 18 and possibly Saul Canelo Alvarez in September. Until now, Golovkin’s opposition during his career has been less than stellar. Golovkin has fought a few decent fighters like Martin Murray, David Lemieux and Curtis Stevens, but no one really talented.
This is going to be very difficult for Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) to keep his unbeaten record. Having to face Jacobs AND Canelo in the same year is going to be like running a gauntlet for GGG. Both guys are big punchers, and both have excellent power and boxing skills.
Sadly, Kell Brook may be the best fighter that Golovkin has faced since turning pro, and he’s a welterweight. Golovkin is entering 2017 with no wins of substance on his resume, and he has a TON of question marks that still need to be answered. We’re going to find out this year whether GGG is who the boxing public and his management say he is or if he’s just another guy with an inflated resume based off wins over weak opponents.
Golovkin, 34, got hit a lot against Brook. Golovkin was still able to win the fight though, because Brook didn’t have the punching power needed to him to cause him problems. Additionally, Brook’s right eye socket was broken in the 1st round, and he was not able to continue fighting once Golovkin got his offense ramped up in the 5th.
There are many boxing fans who believe that Golovkin will lose to Canelo and Jacobs. Golovkin won’t get a shot at Canelo if he loses to Jacobs. He can forget about the Canelo fight in 2017 if he can’t get past the 29-year-old Jacobs. Canelo vs. Golovkin can still get made, but we’re talking 2018, because Golovkin would need to rebuild his name with the boxing public.
If Golovkin plans on beating Jacobs and Canelo, he’s going to need to get hit a lot less by those guys than he did in his fight against Brook. Jacobs and Canelo hit too hard, and they’ll cause serious damage to GGG.
If Golovkin is going to get hit a lot by those fighters, then he’ll need to make sure that he lands enough of his own big power shots to get both of them out of there. It’s not as easy to hit Canelo as it is Jacobs. Golovkin may end up hitting a lot of air if he head hunts against Canelo Alvarez. Throwing punches to the body of Canelo is a definite must for GGG.
Canelo looked plenty beatable in his last two fights against Liam Smith and Amir Khan. If you take a look at both fighters, you can spot the slowing down of Canelo from the fighter he was three years ago. Canelo is maturing, and becoming heavier set. That’s not great news for him and Golden Boy, because his speed was one of the things that helped make him successful.
