Daniel Jacobs is usually a pretty humble fighter, but today he showed a different side at his press conference with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Jacobs said he’s going to shock the world and he’s going to be the new undisputed middleweight champion.
For his part, Golovkin was modest as usual. When asked by one of the boxing reporters who hit him the hardest in his career, he said that they all hit hard. He said he’d never been knocked out, but maybe in his next fight he could get knocked out. The reporter didn’t have anything to say in response. I think Golovkin was a little annoyed by the question to be honest.
As much as I’d like to see Jacobs become the undisputed champion of the 160lb division, I can’t see him doing that. I think he’s going to get taken out by GGG on March 18 in their fight on HBO PPV. Jacobs has only fought one good opponent in his career in Dmitry Pirog, and the outcome of that fight wasn’t so good for him. Pirog knocked him out in the 5th. I mean, Jacobs was OUT COLD after getting hit by a right hand from Pirog in the 5th. It’s been nothing but marginal fighters since then for Jacobs with him winning his last 12 fights by stoppage.
“This is the fight that I have always wanted. This is the pinnacle that you could possibly reach to consider yourself the best,” said Jacobs. “I have the utmost respect for Gennady and his team. I believe that these guys are the best in the middleweight division and I have to come to prove to the world – and to shock the world – that I am the best. If I am 100 per cent mentally and physically prepared there is going to be a new undisputed middleweight champion of the world.”
Jacobs will need to be confident, aggressive and he’ll need a good chin if he wants to beat Triple G in this fight. Having seen Jacobs give ground to less than dangerous fighters in the past, I think he’s going to get walked down and stopped by Golovkin in that order. Jacobs has boxing ability, but he doesn’t have the punch resistance to take the kind of shots that Golovkin is going to be hitting him with. I believe that Jacobs seems to know that, because he’s going to be on the run when he gets inside the ring with Golovkin. If Jacobs tries to make it a dog fight, then more power to him. I’ll respect Jacobs if he at least tries to fight Golovkin rather than just spoiling for as long as it lasts.
