If trainer Freddie Roach has his way, former four-time world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) would be the one getting a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he chooses to make a comeback rather than a rematch between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather beat both fighters already, and he’s shown zero interest in fighting either of them again.
A lot of boxing fans would like to see Mayweather fight Cotto or Pacquiao again, but the fights don’t seem to motivate him enough to get off the couch to return to the ring.
Roach trains both Cotto and Pacquiao, but he would prefer to see the 36-year-old Cotto get the rematch, because he feels he would stand a better chance in a rematch against Mayweather than Pacquiao. Mayweather beat Pacquiao fairly easily in 2015 in winning a 12 round unanimous decision. In contrast, Cotto gave Mayweather all he could handle before fading in the later rounds in losing a 12 round unanimous decision in May 2012.
Roach said to Fighthype.com this about his preferences for who he wants Mayweather to fight if he makes a comeback:
“I think Cotto’s chances are better [for beating Mayweather than Pacquiao’s], because he’s bigger and stronger,” said Roach. “I would like to see Miguel in that fight to be honest with you, more so than Pacquiao at this point.
Cotto isn’t likely going to get a second shot at Mayweather, because he’s not taking chances with his career any longer. Cotto lost to Saul Canelo Alvarez in November 2015. Cotto has been out of the ring ever since then. Cotto is now scheduled to fight James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) on February 25 in Frisco, Texas. That’s not an inspiring choice. It just makes Cotto look like a cherry picker in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans and member of the media.
If Mayweather did return to the sport, he would likely want to face someone that is a relevant fighter, not someone that is cashing out with easy fights, which is what Cotto appears to be doing with the Kirkland fight. Cotto could face Canelo in a rematch later this year, but it’s hard to get excited about that fight, because neither guy is doing anything in challenging themselves with serious fights. Canelo is coming off of back to back fights against welterweight Amir Khan and Liam Smith. Those were soft targets for Canelo.
For Canelo’s next fight, he could be facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in May. That’s another easy fight for Canelo. The boxing world would love it if Canelo would face someone like Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs or Jermall Charlo in May, but that’s not going to happen. Golden Boy, the promoters for Canelo, won’t make any of those fights in May. Instead, they’re looking to match Canelo against Chavez Jr. in what shapes up to be another mismatch for the red-headed star.
