Adrien Broner was the better man on Saturday night just barely in a narrow 10 round split decision win over Adrian Granados at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was a fight that was open to interpretation. Two of the judges felt that Broner was the better man in scoring the fight to him by the scores 97-93 and 96-94, but the third judge had Granados winning by a fairly wide score of 97-93.
The results of the fight had a lot of boxing fans unhappy, because they thought that Broner lost. The fans that saw Broner winning were not impressed with what they saw from him. Those fans were perhaps expecting the Broner from 2008 to 2013 when he was easily beating his opposition and still undefeated. What the fans saw on Saturday night was Broner getting out-punched, out-worked and needing to hold a lot to slow Granados’s work rate down.
The punch states for the fight showed Granados throwing over 200 more punches in the fight in throwing 683 compared to 403.
Granados was pushing the fight in every round, and pretty much getting the better of Broner, who looked lazy, slow and not particularly powerful.
After the fight, Broner confessed that his left hand was injured early in the fight. I’m not sure if that explanation went over too well with the boxing fans because they got busy booing him at that point.
“I was beating him up,” said Broner about Granados. “This was an easy one for me. I feel good.”
Broner might be kidding about him beating Granados up. It was the opposite. Broner was the one getting beaten up in the fight, which is why he resorted to bending the rules so often with his excessive clinching. Broner was also hitting Granados with his forearm and doing a lot of pushing off. Broner needs to take a look at the replay of the Granados fight so he can see for himself how badly he did.
“Let’s do it again,” said Granados about the Broner fight. “I can’t wait to watch this fight because I know I won. Come to my house.”
It would be interesting for the boxing fans if Broner and Granados were to fight again, because the results of the fight didn’t sit well with the fans. I don’t think Broner wants any part of a second fight between him and Granados. Broner has the opportunity to fight for a world title against WBA 140lb champion Ricky Burns, and he’ll likely take the fight. Granados is going to need to be satisfied with the performance he put in tonight.
