In a fight of the year candidate, Dominic Breazeale (18-1, 16 KOs) scored a 5th round knockout over Izuagbe Ugonoh (17-1, 14 KOs) last Saturday night at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Both men visited the canvas before the fifth round. Breazeale took command of the fight in round 5 to put Ugonoh down two times before the referee stopped the fight.
The fight had to be stopped after Breazeale knocked the hurt Ugonoh threw the ropes, and the Nigerian heavyweight was not in the condition to extricate himself from the ropes to get back inside the ring. Ugonoh looked tired. He had punched himself out in the first three rounds of the fight, and he wasn’t ready for Breazeale to still be there in round 4. Ugonoh had knocked Breazeale down in round 4, and had him close to being knocked out.
As the 4th round was ending, Breazeale came to life and hurt Ugonoh was a shot to the back that immobilized him after the round. Besides being hurt, Ugonoh was totally exhausted. He’s a muscular fighter with a lot of body building muscle, and he wasn’t ready for a back and forth type of brawl like last night.
Breazeale had knocked Ugonoh down in round with a right hand. Ugonoh had controlled the first couple of rounds with his nice power shots. He looked very good until tasting the canvas in the 3rd. Ugonoh came back well in the 4th with a late surge in the round. Unfortunately, Ugonoh punched himself out and had nothing left in the last 30 seconds of the 4th.
In between the 4th and 5th, Ugonoh was breathing heavy and it seemed obvious that he was not going to be able to catch his second wind to fight effectively in the 5th. Sure enough, Ugonoh was too tired to throw punches in round 5, and Breazeale took over the fight. Breazeale backe Ugonoh up against the ropes and hurt him with two hard right hands to the head. Ugonoh then sunk to the canvas in a delayed reaction.
After Ugonoh got back up, Breazeale landed a big right hand to the head that sent Ugonoh down and through the ropes. The referee didn’t bother to wait and see if Ugonoh would be able to climb back inside the ring. He immediately waived the fight off. The official time of the stoppage was at 0:50 of the 5th.
