Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is looking sensational in his preparation for his May 6 fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo started camp already in good shape, but he’s since gotten even sharper looking. Canelo looks huge in the video and pictures of him. Canelo appears to have put on a little weight in bulking up to fight at the 164 ½ pound catch-weight for the fight. The added size hasn’t hurt Canelo’s hand speed, however, as he’s just as fast as he’s always been.
This is slight detour for Canelo before he faces a much bigger test against Gennady Golovkin in September. That’s a fight that the boxing world is looking forward to in great anticipation. Chavez Jr. is “business fight” that Golden Boy wanted to put together for Canelo. It’s a money fight between Canelo and a fighter that rarely fights nowadays in Chavez Jr.

Chavez Jr. is going to need to figure out a way to handle the hand speed advantage that Canelo has in this fight. It doesn’t matter that Chavez Jr. is going to come into the fight in great shape. He lacks the hand speed to beat Canelo by a decision. Chavez Jr. will need to go for a knockout for him to get the ‘W’ in this fight. Canelo hasn’t knocked out before, so Chavez Jr. has got his work cut out for him.
This is Canelo’s first fight at super middleweight. He’s fighting Chavez Jr. in the 168 lb. division because it’s too difficult for him to get down to 160 at this point in his career. Canelo wanted to fight Chavez Jr. now before he put on more weight and moved up to light heavyweight. The two fighters dislike each other, and this fight gives them a chance to prove which of them is better. Canelo’s boxing career is obviously going a lot smoother than Chavez Jr’s, but that’s because he’s been a lot more disciplined. Chavez Jr. has lacked motivation in the last 5 years since he lost his WBC middleweight title to Sergio Martinez in 2012.
