The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor mega-fight is not close to being done for June 10, according to UFC head honcho Dana White. He says there is no date for the fight, as it’s not close to happening. The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada is reportedly on reserve for the Mayweather-McGregor fight.
Mayweather created a lot of buzz a couple of weeks ago when he told the boxing media that he’s coming out of retirement to face McGregor in June. The news got a lot of attention with the boxing fans for a few days. The fans are now starting to realize that Mayweather might as well be saying the sky is falling, because his fight with McGregor seems like it’s no closer now than it was when he first mentioned wanting to fight him 2 years ago.
The Mayweather-McGregor fight is “nowhere near being done” said Dana White to TMZ.com. “There is no target date whatsoever,” said White.
Meanwhile, Mayweather’s asking price is $100 million for a fight against McGregor. The problem with Mayweather getting that amount of money is that it would likely require that he receive the lion’s share of the profits for the fight. McGregor wants a fair deal. It’s not going to work if Mayweather takes the majority of the money for the fight.
If the negotiations fail to produce a fight anytime soon, Mayweather would be better off returning to the boxing sport and facing some of the top fighters. With all the time that Mayweather has spent in talking about a fight against McGregor, he could have fought 3 to 6 times, and made more money than he would get from that fight. However, the boxing fans would expect Mayweather to fight a good opponent if he did return to the sport. Mayweather couldn’t expect huge PPV numbers if he chose to fight someone like Andre Berto or Robert Guerrero again like he did during his last 6-fight run of his career.
The fans want to see a competitive fight, and that would mean Mayweather fighting someone like Gennady Golovkin or Keith Thurman. The boxing public would love either of those fights. I’m no sure that Mayweather would, which is probably why he’s so interested in fighting a novice like McGregor, who has no experience in boxing.
