By Manuel Perez: Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is looking VERY fat right with 4 months to go before his September 16 fight against boxing’s number 1 star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. In a Tweet on Friday by Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, Golovkin midsection showed a considerable paunch that you normally see from a middle-aged man.
Golovkin is looking more like a retired boxing star rather than middleweight world champion. If I’m Canelo, I’m stomping my feet ready to go after that soft midsection of Golovkin’s on September 16. There’s a lot of fat there that I don’t think he’s going to be able to burn off in time for the fight with Canelo. I could be wrong, but I think that stubborn belly fat us going to be an early Christmas present for Canelo.
I don’t know about you, but I’m picking Canelo to win this fight against GGG after seeing this picture. I know there’s still time for Golovkin to burn off the fat, but I don’t know if he’s going to be able to burn off that belly fat he’s put on. I almost died laughing when I saw how out of shape GGG was in this photo.
I still do not understand why Triple G let himself be photographed with his shirt off with him this out of shape. If it was me, I’d tell the photographer that I need to keep my short. He’s too fat for a photo without his shirt. If this is a photo that is going to be used to help publicize the Canelo-Golovkin fight, it might work in reverse by scaring the boxing fans away from purchasing it on HBO PPV. I’m just saying.

This is bad. How did the 35-year-old Golovkin get so fat in just in just 2 months since his March 18 fight against Danny Jacobs. I can understand Triple G letting his foot off the gas pedal a little to unwind after his narrow 12 round decision win over Jacobs, but this is ridiculous. Golovkin looks like he’s been munching on a lot of fat for him to get this flabby in just 2 months.
Golovkin is obviously used to fighting three times per year. He’s been so busy in the last few years that he’s never had the chance to get out of shape like he is now. I think it might be in Golovkin’s best interest to go back to fighting three times per year once again because he can’t let himself get fat like this in the future if he wants to be able to cut the weight and stay middleweight. Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez has talked a lot recently about Golovkin potentially leaving the 160 pound division after this year to start fighting at super middleweight. After looking at how fat Golovkin is, I can understand why Sanchez is talking about him potentially moving up to 168. If Golovkin is going to let himself go like this in the future, he might wind up at 175.
Canelo wouldn’t let himself go like this. The Mexican warrior takes his diet and training seriously. He’s always in great shape stay at that level year round. Canelo is ambitious and that’s why I respect him. He’s serious, and he lives a very austere, Spartan lifestyle by denying himself. That’s what makes Canelo so good. He’s serious and he treats his body right by not letting himself get flabby in between fights, because he wants to be great. When you strive to be the best, you can’t let your midsection to grow to the point where it’s hanging over your trousers like what we’re seeing from GGG.
The question I have to ask is this: Will Golovkin be able to burn his tubby down to get in fighting shape by September 16? As far as I know, Golovkin hasn’t started training yet, but he still looks like he’s got a good 25 pounds that he’s going to need to melt off before he can make weight for the Canelo fight. It might be a good idea for Golovkin to let Golden Boy Promotions know if he’s going to need more time to burn off the weight around his midsection.
I’m sure that would make Floyd Mayweather Jr., Conor McGregor and some in the boxing world happy if Canelo and GGG gave up the September 16 date, because that’s the Mexican Independence Day Holiday weekend. I’m sure Mayweather would gladly take the September date because he could probably count on getting an extra 2 million PPV buys by him taking that date. As heavy as Golovkin looks right now, he might be better off fighting Canelo in December. That would give GGG 7 months to burn off the fat and be looking like the Golovkin of old.
How does it happen that a guy the boxing fans and media have been going crazy for in the last year get this fat? Was Golovkin celebrating his lucky win over Jacobs for the past 2 months solid without getting back in the gym? It sure looks like it to me. You don’t get fat like that by training hard and denying yourself the pleasures of a bowl of ice cream and some tasty cakes and candy bars.
Golovkin needs to get on a nice fish diet and go easy on the food for a while so he can get to a nice starting point for his training camp. What we don’t need is GGG to have his training camp be a glorified fat farm where he’s spending the first 7 weeks trying to burn off his protruding belly and then only have 1 actual week of boxing training. I’m just saying.
Golovkin’s going to get a ton of cash for the Canelo fight. I hope Golovkin is going to take the fight with Canelo more seriously than Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. did in their fight on May 6, because it seems to me that he just showed up to get a payday and not to actually fight. I hope Golovkin tried to put in some effort in this fight and doesn’t just go through the motions knowing that he’s going to be paid no matter what he does in the fight. That’s the whole problem with boxing. You’re going to make your money in a big money fight like this no matter what you do. Just getting the fight is like winning the Super Bowl. Everything else is just gravy. I hope Golovkin can stay away from the refrigerator until after the Canelo fight because want to see an exciting fight, not another mismatch involving Canelo.
