By Rich Cheney: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder is willing to give Matchoom Sport fighter Dillian Whyte a title shots if his promoter Eddie Hearn gives him $7 million for the fight. That doesn’t seem to fit the budget that Hearn has for Wilder, as he’s offering $3 million.
Wilder told Hearn through his Intagram account that he wants the offer that he made to be increased. Before Wilder posted on his Instagram, Hearn had said that he had made a “big offer” to Wilder for the Dillian Whyte fight, but he didn’t reveal how much that offer was. Wilder doesn’t agree that $3 million is a bigger offer.
There’s risk involved for Wilder, as if he gets beaten for that money, then he would lose out on a payday that will pay him considerably more in a fight against IBF, WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. That’s the fight that Wilder is anxiously looking forward to,
Here’s part of Wilder’s post on his Instagram:
“If you’re serious get your master Eddie Hearn to follow the procedures and get the fight made, He bought a fresh champion in Charles Martin’s IBF Belt so let’s see him come and buy mine! Please do the Brits a favor and come and shut this American WBC Champion up because how I see it, it’s USA vs. Everybody! “The Takeover has begun. Now think it’s a game and watch me stand over your body as the gun smoke clears.”
The fight is there for Whyte if Hearn is willing to dig deep enough to come up with the needed cash to buy him the world title like he arguably bought for Joshua in luring Charles Martin to fight him. If Hearn badly wants Whyte to fight for Wilder’s WBC title, there will need to be a sweetening of the offer by Hearn. He should try bumping his offer up to $4 million to see if that gets Wilder to agree to the fight.
Hearn can increase the value of his fighter Whyte if he beats Wilder or even if he loses to him. All Whyte needs is to make it competitive for him to come out of the fight with the “Bronze Bomber” looking like a hero in the minds of a lot of the British boxing fans. It won’t be easy though because Whyte is easy to hit, and Wilder only needs one big punch for him to knock Whyte out cold. We already saw Joshua knock Whyte out in the 7th round in 2015. Whyte gassed out after 2 rounds and was a punching bag for Joshua in rounds 3 through 7. Joshua gassed out too, but he was able to get a second wind and go on to get the victory.
