With 6 weeks to go before the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin mega-fight on September 16, Triple G is looking massive for their fight on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a recent photo of Golovkin standing with cruiserweight champion Murat Gassiev, Golovkin looks almost as big as him.
Gassiev tends rehydrates over 200 pounds for his cruiserweight fights. What this means for Canelo is he’s going to have some problems in this fight. We already know that Canelo, 5’8”, is the smaller fighter than the 5’10 ½” Golovkin. Canelo is giving up height, reach weight and power in this fight.
The only thing Canelo has going for him is his hand speed advantage. You can say that the Canelo will have the crowd advantage, which may help him get a decision with the judges if the fight goes to the scorecards on September 16.
It’s smart for Golovkin to be focusing on size for this fight because Canelo tends to try and be the bigger guy each time he fights. He likes to rehydrate and have a size advantage over his opponents.
If Golovkin comes into the fight in the 180s on September 16, he’s going to put a lot of pressure on Canelo to deal with that size and power. Golovkin isn’t out of shape at the start of his training camp. He’s also less likely to ne weight drained like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was for his May 6 fight against Canelo.
I don’t know what Canelo is going to do to compete with Golovkin in this fight. As big as Golovkin is, Canelo is going to have to find a way to compete, because he’s not going to be able to go directly at the Kazakhstan fighter. They say that Canelo likes when his opponents come directly at him so he can land his counter punches, but I don’t know if that’s going to work for him against Triple G.
I’m worried about Canelo. I was thinking that he would be big for the fight and would be able to match-up with his size. Now looking at the photo of Golovkin, I don’t think it’s realistic that Canelo is going to be able to handle him if he goes directly at him the way he did with Kell Brook. I’m worried about Canelo now.
These are things that Canelo can to do handle the size of GGG:
– Move frequently
– Stay on the outside
– Hit and run
Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya will no doubt be giving him plenty of advice to try and deal with Golovkin’s offense. I don’t know if anything De La Hoya can come up with will be enough to keep Canelo on his feet and in the fight. The biggest problem that Canelo has for this fight is the fact that he can’t fight for an extended period of time without getting tired.
Canelo fights in brief spurts and then needs to take rest breaks to recover. There are no rest breaks against Golovkin, being that he goes after his opponents to force them to fight for survival. The moment that Canelo goes to the ropes to try and catch his breath, he’s going to be getting bombarded by GGG.
I don’t know how effective these things will be against a fighter like Golovkin. He cuts off the ring extremely well, and he’s got a power jab that he likes to throw at his opponent’s right before he nails them with left hooks and right hands. Canelo is not going to be able to get out of the way of Golovkin’s jabs, because he’s got the reach advantage.
Even if Canelo does find a way to get out of the way of GGG’s jabs, he’s going to have to deal with his body punching. Golovkin will have that as his Plan-B target area if Canelo chooses to move his head a lot to keep from getting hit. Canelo likes to lean backwards to try and keep from getting hit. That’s not going to work against Golovkin. If Canelo does that, then Golovkin will target his body or go after his head with a long right to try and knock him out.
Right now, I’d say Golovkin looks like he’s hovering around 190 lbs. He’s going to need to take some of that muscle off to make him look more like a middleweight and less like a cruiserweight when the two fighters meet on September 15 for the weigh-in the day before the fight. Golovkin is too big fight now to make weight. But his size is impressive. It suggests that Golovkin has been working on his strength to bulk up for the fight. It’s too bad Golovkin didn’t do that for his last fight against Danny Jacobs on March 18 because he looked like the much smaller fighter in that fight.
When I mean smaller, I mean he looked to be the lighter fighter by at least 15 to 20 lbs. Jacobs We saw how Jacobs used his size to try and get the better of Golovkin, and he did during portions of the fight. It looks to me like Golovkin didn’t like being the smaller guy, so he’s bulked out for this fight against Canelo.
Judging from the photo of Golovkin, he doesn’t look like he’s lost any weight since he entered the ring on May 6 to announce the news of his fight against Canelo immediately following the Canelo vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight on May 6. Golovkin looked much bigger than Canelo when the two fighters were standing next to each other during that time. Golovkin also looked a lot bigger in their kickoff press conference.
Canelo might come into the Golovkin fighting weighing 175-180 lbs. If Golovkin is in the low 170s, then Canelo will have a small weight advantage, but that’s probably not going to help him get the victory. Canelo has to be able to nullify Golovkin’s height, reach and power advantage, because he’s going to be looking to hurt the red-headed Mexican fighter with his power in each round.
Golovkin’s last opponent Danny Jacobs looked extremely afraid of Golovkin in the first six rounds of their fight on March 18. Golovkin knocked Jacobs down, and seemed to have him afraid to do anything in the fight. If a guy with Jacobs’ size and power was afraid of Golovkin, then what’s Canelo going to do when he gets inside there.
Is he going to hoist the white flag of surrender once he finds out that GGG isn’t over-the-hill and old at 35? Canelo is at his physical peak right now at 27, but he simply doesn’t have the frame and the natural power that Golovkin has. He’s from Eastern Europe, and he has power that you don’t see from other fighters. That’s why Golovkin has been so successful. He’s go so much power that it puts his opponents in a situation where they try and get away from him in a fight or flight mechanism.
There are some boxing fans that believes that Golovkin is going to be focusing on using his jab to box Canelo. I don’t think he’s going to do that. I see Golovkin coming out throwing major power shots to the head and body of Canelo. In other words, Golovkin is going to treat this fight like he did the Kell Brook fight in 2016.
