By Manuel Perez: Featherweight world champions Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares will both be fighting in separate fights on October 14 in a doubleheader on Fox in Los Angeles, California. The bad news is Santa Cruz and Mares won’t be fighting a rematch, yet.
On the same date on October 14, WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo will be fighting #1 WBC mandatory challenger Erickson Lubin at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Mare and Santa Cruz’s separate fights will take place during the day on Fox, whereas he Charlo-Lubin will take place in the evening on Showtime.
“Yeah, I am a little disappointed because for a second there I thought everything was 100 percent confirmed and I was excited to face him again, but it happens, and now whatever comes my way, I’m ready,” Mares said via RingTV.com. ”Whoever they put in front of me, it’s a fight away from the Leo fight.”
After Mares and Santa Cruz fight on the October 14 card in Los Angeles, the plan is for them to face each other. The reason they’re fighting on separate fights on October 14 is to help build up interest in their rematch.
Mares (30-2-1, 15 KOs) lost to Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) by a 12 round majority decision on August 29, 2015 in a one-sided fight. One of the judges scored it a draw, but he was overruled by the other two judges, who scored it 117-111 and 117-111 for Santa Cruz.
