With a little over 1 week to go before the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight on September 16, there are a lot of boxing fans starting to openly ask how Canelo put on so much muscle weight for this fight.
Many of the fans are saying Canelo’s muscles are looking unnatural, and some of the fans think he’s using or was using performance enhancing drugs to add rapid muscle weight to his frame. Hopefully that’s not the case, because the sport needs to be a clean one and not fighters trying to get an edge using illegal substances. The boxing fans will be upset if the fight results are tainted with a positive drug test.
Canelo doesn’t even look like the same person with the body transformation. This is rare for Canelo. He’s never had a body transformation like this before. He’s always looked like the same guy in terms of size and the way his muscles look from weight class to weight class. The way that Canelo’s muscles look now, it doesn’t look natural.
I don’t know how Canelo is going to make middleweight, and then rehydrate. That can’t be a good thing for Canelo to try and win the fight against Golovkin. It’s almost as if Canelo is betting that he’ll get to Golovkin with his bulk before he runs out of gas from having rehydrated so much weight.
The photos of Canelo and Golovkin standing side by side last May show Canelo at the pumped up size he was a for the Julio Chavez Jr. fight, which took place on May 6.
Canelo was bigger for that fight than he’d been in the past, but he was nowhere near the size he’s looking right now. But with the muscle that Canelo has put on for the Golovkin fight, he doesn’t look like the same fighter. He looks like a completely different guy. Canelo is not only much heavier looking, he’s also wider. He looks like a red-haired Incredible Hulk.
In a recent special shown on HBO, Canelo was gigantic looking compared to Golovkin, who appeared to be sporting a fat stomach. Golovkin did not look well trained at all. The shocking thing was the size of Canelo. In looking at the video, I’d say Canelo was at least 185 minimum. My guess is Canelo was weighing 190 during the video shoot, and it wasn’t fat. It was muscle, huge muscle weight. I don’t know how Canelo is going to shed enough water weight for him to make the weight for the fight with Golovkin.
It’s a benefit for Canelo to be super huge for the fight if he can make weight without left weight drained after he rehydrates. Canelo’s fight weight hasn’t been revealed for quite some time for the weigh that he weighs after he rehydrates for his fights at 154 and 155. But a lot of boxing fans suspect that Canelo has been dropping 20 lbs. of water weight to make weight, and then he rehydrates to come into his fights in the 175 range.
If Canelo is weighing 185 to 190 now, he’s going to need to lose between 25 to 30 lbs. of water weight in the week of the fight to get down to 160. That might be a little too much, even for a guy like Canelo. Fighters that are weight drained tend to do well in the first 6 rounds. They’re able to use their huge size to crush their lighter opponents and/or build a big lead that they use to coast in the second half of the fight after they gas out.
If Canelo gases against Golovkin in the last half of the fight, he could take a beating and wind up getting knocked out. Golovkin isn’t going to be looking to box Canelo. He’s going to be trying to take his head off. But that’s where Canelo’s defensive skills come in. He’s good at resting his back against the ropes, using head movement and throwing counter left hooks and uppercuts to get the better of his opponents. It doesn’t take much energy for Canelo to do this. He can stay against the ropes and fight that way all night long unless he’s getting jabbed and pot-shotted like he was in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in 2013. Mayweather made Canelo pay for going to the ropes. I don’t know if Golovkin has the hand speed and the ring IQ to do the same thing against Canelo.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says he thinks the Canelo-Golovkin fight will bring in over 3 million pay-per-view buys on HBO PPV. If that’s the case, Canelo will make a huge amount of money from the fight. The reason why this is important is because if he comes in over the 160 lb. weight limit by 1-10 pounds, he could have to pay a big weight penalty. Canelo will be able to afford paying a weight penalty if he gets a huge purse due to the fight bringing in a lot of buys.
Golovkin, 35, doesn’t care about the pound for pound No.1 ranking that the winner of the Canelo-Golovkin fight could be given by Ring Magazine. Golovkin only cares about winning the fight. He thinks the pound for pound business is subjective and based on the whim of the different fans in boxing.
“It is not serious for me, that pound for pound,” said Golovkin. “There are so many great fighters. For me, what is more serious is, maybe last five years I destroy my opponents, and Canelo did the same. I do not know who is close with us in the middleweight division. I do not know who is number two, number three, number four.I know this guy [Canelo]. He is a special guy. He is a superstar. He is national idol, a hero,” said Golovkin.
The average casual boxing fans don’t follow the pound-for-pound ratings. The ratings are exclusively followed by the highest level of the hardcore boxing fans. They care enough about the sport to dig into stats, and learn about the ratings in such. The average fans just want to see good fights. Their impressed when the fighters walk into the ring with world title belts in their possession. With the proliferation of title belts in boxing, it makes it confusing for the fans. There are too many different major minor titles constantly on the line for fights.
“This is much bigger for me, not pound-for-pound. Pound-for-pound is just one guy who says, ‘You are number one pound-for-pound,’ and another one says, ‘No, I like that guy more.’ Everybody feels different,” said Golovkin. ”For me, pound-for-pound is not serious. This is my biggest fight. This fight is real because it is about winning a war. It is about boxing history. It is about being the champion of the world,” said Golovkin.
What further undermines the who pound for pound thing is the tendency for Ring magazine to put pure boxers at the top of the list instead of guys with exciting fighting styles? Andre Ward is the No.1 pound for pound fighter in Ring’s rankings. What was strange was how Ring Magazine gave Ward the top spot in the pound or pound rankings after his controversial win over Sergey Kovalev last November. It was not a good enough performance for Ward to be given the top spot.
