By Manuel Perez: Oscar De La Hoya is predicting 9 to 10 rounds of pure hell this weekend in the Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. De La Hoya, of course, is picking his fighter Canelo to get his hand raised at the end of the fight.
De La Hoya likes the counter punching and the left hook to the body that Canelo throws as some of the weapons he’ll use to hand Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) a loss when the two fighters start throwing bombs on Saturday night.
This fight has a lot of importance for the sport of boxing after the exhibition type fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor last month on August 26. De La Hoya feels that a lot of the MMA fans thought the Mayweather-McGregor fight was an exciting one. De La Hoya thinks that many of those fans will be tuning in to watch the Canelo and Golovkin fight on HBO PPV. Those fans will be in for a real treat in this fight, because it’s a real fight that promises nonstop action from start to finish.
“Right now we’re riding a way. Boxing is being talked about,” said De La Hoya to ESPN’s First Take. “You had the Mayweather-McGregor exhibition that took place. Call it what it is, right? And people are focusing on boxing. If you thought that was a good fight, wait until Saturday night. That’s going to be a blood bath,” said De La Hoya.
De La Hoya has the right idea about the Canelo vs. Triple G fight. It’s going to be a blood bath and a war like the Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas “Hitman” Hearns fight that took place years ago at middleweight. That fight lasted just 3 rounds, but Hagler was bloodied after taking some monstrous shots from Hearns. Hagler was able to absorb the punches from Hearns and knock him out, but it was an exciting fight from the beginning to the brutal end in the 3rd.
De La Hoya views Canelo as not only the No.1 money fighter for his promotion at Golden Boy, but also for all of the sport of boxing. De La Hoya says Canelo has taken over for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as the No.1 box office draw, and the only draw for that matter. There’s nobody else in the U.S that brings in PPV buys now that Mayweather has gone back into retirement, and Pacquiao is no longer fighting on PPV at this late stage in his career.
”He’s not Golden Boy’s cash cow. He’s boxing’s cash cow,” said De La Hoya about Canelo. ”Canelo Alvarez is the only fighter now that is a box office draw that can carry boxing to new heights. I believe these types of fights will carry boxing to the stratosphere,” said De La Hoya.
Canelo needs to beat Golovkin to keep on top of the sport. He also needs to take on and beat Danny Jacobs, Jermall Charlo, David Lemieux and Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Those are the only guys that are threats to Canelo once he gets past Golovkin. There will be a tremendous amount of pressure on Canelo and Golden Boy to make those fights against those guys so he can prove that he’s able to defeat them.
”And so what if Canelo loses. If it’s a good fight, then nobody loses,” said De La Hoya. ”That’s how I conducted my career, and that’s how I want to conduct myself as a promoter. These are the fights boxing needs. That’s the bottom line. The fans desire it,” said De La Hoya.
That’s a great outlook that De La Hoya has about how he plans on matching Canelo. It’s the opposite of how the other promoters are conducting their business in boxing. So many of the promoters are playing it safe in picking only guys that that feel their fighters can beat for them to make fights. Pacquiao is perfect example of how a great career in boxing was hurt by the soft match-making that was done by his promoters. De La Hoya needs to make sure that he doesn’t ruin Canelo’s career with the weak match-making like Pacquiao has had. What’s good about De La Hoya is that he doesn’t just match Canelo with fighters from his Golden Boy promotional stable. He matches him against other fighters so that he can keep him fighting the best.
”I really think on Saturday night we’re going to see 9 or 10 rounds of hell,” said De La Hoya. ”It’s going to be a war. I can see the fight right from the 1st bell. Forget about the warm up. 1 through 3, it’s going to be bombs away right from the start. I’m going to go with my boy Canelo Alvarez. What about that counter right and that hook to the body,” said De La Hoya.
I don’t think the fight is going to slow down after the 3rd round. If anything, it’s going to speed up with both fighters trying to tear each other apart with big shots. Golovkin will be trying to wear Canelo down the way he wore Kell Brook down with his hurried pace. Canelo has been training to defeat that kind of fighting style though. If Golovkin is going to beat Canelo, he’ll need to adapt over and over again. Canelo will have a number of ideas in his playbook to negate Golovkin’s power and defeat him in this fight. Speed and movement are 2 things that Canelo will be using to try and take this fight. Golovkin isn’t fast, and he doesn’t do well in dealing with movement. Golovkin has a reputation for being able to cut off the ring effectively to force his opponents to trade with him. But we just saw in Golovkin’s last 2 fights against Kell Brook and Danny Jacobs that he didn’t have the ability to quickly cut off the ring against them. Golovkin did catch up to Brook and eventually stop him. But he wasn’t able to do that effectively against Jacobs, and he almost lost that fight.
