Mayweather-McGregor rumored doing fewer PPV numbers than Mayweather-Pacquiao

By Manuel Perez: failing to top the 4.6 million PPV buys that Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight pulled in. With Showtime still failing to release the final PPV numbers for the Mayweather-McGregor fight, you can treat the rumors as such.

It’s interesting that people claim to know what he PPV totals are for the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight. It’s all guess work unfortunately.

Recently there was talk that Mayweather vs. McGregor would pull in 6.5 million buys on PPV. Now the latest rumors are the fight won’t even hit 4.6 million buys. Even if it falls short of that mark, it’s still a success. When you sell a mismatch between a novice in boxing against a former 6 division world champion, it’s not meant to be competitive. That’s one of the reasons why Mayweather took it easy on McGregor.

If we’re to treat the Mayweather-McGregor PPV rumors as fact, then it’s obviously a disappointment that the fight failed to break the all-time record for PPV buys. Never the less, when you’re talking about a circus fight bringing in over 4 million buys, it’s not a great loss. Mayweather and McGregor are still going to make a bundle from their fight, which should have been ruled an exhibition fight instead of a true professional boxing match.

Mayweather is expected to make over $300 million for the McGregor fight, as he goes back into retirement. Mayweather says he won’t be coming back, but few believe him. Once another easy mark pops up in MMA, boxing or some other sports unrelated to boxing, Mayweather could possibly come out of retirement to sell another event fight. I’m just hoping Mayweather doesn’t start getting really desperate by picking out tennis players and golfers to fight and trying to sell those mismatches to the public. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the state commissions sanction a fight of that nature just like they did with the Mayweather-McGregor mismatch.

Mayweather was smart to select the No.1 fighter from MMA in McGregor and signing him for a fight under the rules of boxing. Even if Mayweather had fought him in the octagon, it would have been a brilliant move by him. It gives Mayweather a bigger cushion in his retirement years to ensure that he doesn’t go broke with his wild spending. There are more than a few boxing fans that see Mayweather eventually burning through his entire fortune with the way he purchases expensive items on a daily basis.
