By Manuel Perez: Paulie Malignaggi and Conor McGregor have a fight in the works, according to the “Magic Man” Malignaggi. He says his manager Al Haymon is working on a deal with UFC president Dana White for a fight against McGregor.
This would be a fight under the rules of boxing for Malignaggi, 36, and the highly popular McGregor. The deal would be a temping enough one for the 29-year-old McGregor not to pass up. McGregor routinely brings in over 1 million buys for his fights in the UFC. However, he doesn’t seem to get as much for those events compared to what he can get in boxing.
“I know Al Haymon’s talking with Dana White. I know they’re speaking so if they want the fight they’ll make it,” said Malignaggi to Fighthype.com. ”You know, I don’t need to do all that because Al Haymon makes anything he wants happen, happen. The only way this doesn’t happen — once I spoke to Team Haymon and they told me they were on board to make this fight I knew they only way it wouldn’t happen is if this guy doesn’t have absolutely any balls to make it,” said Malignaggi.
Malignaggi shouldn’t get too excited. Just because there’s talks going on between Dana White and Al Haymon doesn’t necessarily mean a fight will take place. There are a lot of things that need to take place before a fight can get made between Malignaggi and McGregor.
McGregor is coming off of a 10th round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on August 26 in Las Vegas.
“But this fight would pay him more, this fight would get him more exposure, this fight is a bigger fight than anything else he has,” said Malignaggi. “There’s no more Mayweather fight, this fight is the biggest fight there is. So once they told me that I said ‘alright, the only way this doesn’t happen is if this guy has no balls — which wouldn’t surprise me because he has no balls — but what I’m saying is, the way they’re going to present it to him, it’s going to be presented in a way where he really shouldn’t turn it down.”
This isn’t the biggest fight for McGregor in boxing, but it’s probably the safest fight for him against a name fighter. McGregor isn’t going to risk his hide fighting a good boxer. We already know that. McGregor is looking for a relatively soft touch that he can beat him and use to siphon away boxing fans to follow his fights in the UFC.
