Promoter Kalle Sauerland has 3 potential options for the World Boxing Super Series semifinals contest between WBA World cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (13-0, 11 KOs) and WBC champion Mairis Briedis (23-0, 18 KOs). The possibilities are as follows: Kiev, Ukraine, Riga, Latvia or U.S.
Usyk, 30, lives in Kiev, and having the fight staged there would be huge advantage for him. Usyk is the No.1 seed, and that might be enough to get hometown advantage against the 32-year-old Briedis.
Usyk defeated former WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck by a 10th round knockout in his quarterfinals match in the World Boxing Super Series on September 9 in Germany. Usyk was impressive in drilling Huck with power shots in round 10 until the referee Robert Byrd was forced to halt the fight.
Briedis, 32, didn’t look that impressive in beating former heavyweight contender Mike Perez by a 12 round unanimous decision on September 30 in Riga, Latvia. Briedis wore down Perez in grinding out a decision by the scores 116-110, 114-112 and 115-111.
Usyk has to be considered the favorite to defeat Briedis in the semifinals based on the way the two fighters looked in their last fights in the World Boxing Super Series.
