Saunders, 28, isn’t known for being the biggest puncher in boxing, which makes it seem kind of odd that he’s taking about beating Lemieux to the point where he’s talking about wanting the fight to be over with.

Saunders and Lemieux met for their kick off press conference on Monday to talk about their fight on December 16 on HBO Boxing.

“David is going to eat some, and he’s going to beg me to finish him off,” said Saunders. “Styles make fight. It’s the classic match-up between the boxer and the puncher and I’m looking forward to it. I was born to fight, and I’m going to prove it by unifying the belts as soon as I’m done with David,” said Saunders.

This is hilarious. Saunders sounds like he’s reciting stuff that he read from a novel that has nothing to do with him. If Saunders had the power, and fighting style to carry out all the stuff he’s blabbering about, then Lemieux would be in big trouble on December 16. Unfortunately, Saunders can’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag.

The guy has got feather fists, and there’s no way that he’s going to be able to do any damage to Saunders. But if Saunders does try and go after Lemieux like he’s talking about, he’s going to get nailed with something big by the hard-hitting Canadian fighter.

This will be Saunders’ third defense of his World Boxing Organization 160lb. title that he won in 2015 with a 12 round majority decision win over Andy Lee on December 19, 2015. Saunders has taken two soft defenses in beating Artur Akavov and Willie Monroe Jr. Saunders likely would have continued taking soft defenses until he got the winner or loser of the Canelo vs. Golovkin fight if the WBO hadn’t ordered him to fight Lemieux.

“Lemieux shows a lot of heart when he comes to fight but the real truth is, I’m too slick and too good for him. I’m in boxing to win and defend my belt all over the world, Lemieux is my tester for the winner of Canelo and Gennady Golovkin,” said Saunders.

The winner of the Saunders vs. Lemieux is expected to get a monstrous payday against the winner of the rematch between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. They might even get the Canelo fight right away. We’re still not sure if the Canelo-GGG rematch will take place in early next year or not. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is talking about wanting to match Canelo against Lemieux next if he does the job on Saunders and looks good doing it.

“If the fight demands me chasing you, I will chase you. If the fight demands me to go toe-to-toe, I will,” said Lemieux. ”On Dec. 16, I promise that I won’t leave the Place Bell without the belt. I’m extremely excited. Let’s get it on. I think that you are in for a surprise. I will be at my best and take the title from you,” said Lemieux.
