Eddie Hearn says the winner of the Alexander Povetkin vs. Christian Hammer fight could become the new WBA mandatory challenger to champion Anthony Joshua.
Joshua’s previous WBA mandatory challenger Luis Ortiz tested positive for 2 banned drugs, and he’s been banned by the WBA for 1 year until September 2018. The WBA now plans on replacing Ortiz as the mandatory for Joshua.
Povetkin (32-1, 23 KOs) and Hammer (22-4, 12 KOs) will be fighting next month on December 15 at the DIVS, in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Povetkin, 38, missed out on a world title shot last year after he tested positive for a banned drug while preparing for a title shot against WBC champion Deontay Wilder.
What’s interesting here is Povetkin and Hammer were supposed to be already fighting in a WBO final eliminator. I’m sure they’d rather fight in a WBA title eliminator, because the money fighting Joshua will likely be a heck of a lot more than what they’d get fighting WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker.
