Former world champion Andy Lee recommends that WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) fights smart in his title defense against his mandatory challenger David Lemieux (38-3, 35 KOs) in their fight on HBO on December 16 at the Place Bell, Quebec.
Lee feels it could be tough on Saunders, 28, to get a win over Lemieux with the fight taking place in Canada. Lee says Saunders should emphasis throwing straight punches against Lemieux to keep him from being able to connect straight down the middle with his big shots.
“I know he’ll be very focused. He’s a very hungry fighter. He’s a competitor; he never wants to give an inch. He’s going to have to be on his game in Canada to get the decision,” said Lee to IFL TV. “Straight punches, be smart, don’t hold your feet too long. Be slick, be moving and Billy Joe will win. You don’t want to take any chances, especially away from home.”
With the way that Lemieux is sitting down on his power shots nowadays, it’s going to be a real accomplishment for Saunders to make it the full distance with him. Lee seems to be forgetting the huge power that Lemieux throws with, because he’s so concerned with the fight going to the scorecards and Saunders maybe getting robbed in the fight. If the fight goes to the scorecards.
Saunders is likely going to be so battered and bruised that any judge in boxing would have a simple time picking out the true winner in the fight. Saunders’ best chance of winning the fight is for him to try and get a knockout., which is going to be extremely hard for him to do with his lack of punching power.
If Lee has his way, he’ll get the winner of the Saunders vs. Lemieux fight. Unfortunately that’s not likely to happen. Golden Boy Promotions are interested in having Lemieux face Saul Canelo Alvarez if he can get past Saunders.
“I would love a rematch with Billy Joe Saunders. We’re good friends, nothing personal against him. He pipped me on the night. Two knockdowns swayed it in his favor. Close fight,” Lee Said. “I’d love to fight the winner. It’s a tough fight for Saunders. He has the tools to win it, I think he will win it. But going away from home is a different thing, he hasn’t experienced that before.”
